The Basics
Mixed Raise Options
1Z-(X)-1Y: New suit at the 1-level forcing 1 round. Should show a decent hand and a good suit.
1Z-(X)-2C-2Y (Y is the lower unbid suit): Same-Level correction does not promise extras, but is rather showing a good two-suiter and asks for a preference.
1Z-(X)-XX: Tends to deny a fit (though may have 3 of partner's major or 4 of partner's minor). Promises 10+HCP, and expresses a serious interest in doubling and defending. Partner is asked to cooperate accordingly, especially if balanced.
1Z-(X)-2N: Promises a fit (at least 3 of a major, though some of us like it to show 4, or 4+ of a minor) and at least limit raise values.
1W-(X)-3Y (Y higher than W),
1W-(X)-4Z (Z lower than W):
Pay no attention to the doubles; these are splinters!
1Y-(X)-2Y: 3-card support or better, fewer than 10 points.
1Y-(X)-3Y: 4-card support; 0-6 points.
1Y-(X)-Jump Shift: Natural and preemptive.
Some of us play systems after RHO has doubled partner's 1-of-a-major opening
to show intermediate hands with support. Two verisons of such systems are
shown below. In both cases, that alters the simple raise as follows:
1M-(X)-2SM: Exactly 3-card support. 6 or
fewer dummy points.
Version 1:
1M-(X)-2D: 4-card support. 7-10 dummy
points.
Version 2:
1M-(X)-3R (where the red responded suit is the
suit directly below the suit opened): 4-card support. 7-10 dummy points.
1M-(X)-2C: Exactly 3-card support. 7-10
dummy points.
1M-(X)-2R (where the red responded suit is the
suit directly below the suit opened): Exactly 3-card support. 7-10
dummy points.
