JFK Stadium, Philadelphia PA, 7/7/89 This would be the last event ever at JFK Stadium. After we were through with it, they decided the place was just too unsafe, and it was torn down shortly thereafter.
The show itself was a coming out for Brent, who would provide so many incredible moments in the last year of his life. At the same time, it along with the pay-per-view Shoreline show two weeks prior helped to announce a new golden age for the Dead. The momentum built during the summer tour would just explode in the fall and throughout 1990.
But on this hot day, the most memorable parts of the show come from the first set. We got a jammy Little Red Rooster and as smoking a Loser as you'll ever want to hear. But the story of the night was Brent's blitzing the crowd with a 13 minute rendition of Blow Away, a song many there had not yet heard in any form. Brent finished the song and the set with a long Pigpen-like rap that just wouldn't stop as he built the crowd into a frenzy.
There were a few moments worth mentioning in the second set -- the Box of Rain and a well-timed Standing on the Moon come to mind.
