Education
I am a second-year PhD student of Computer Science at George Mason University (VA). I am a Graduate Research Assistant at Machine Learning and Inference Lab and also System Administrator in the Department of Health Administration and Policy.
Before coming here, I was a member of IT Research team at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences as an Application Analyst. I hold a M.S. degree in Computer Science from University of Nevada,Reno (NV) and a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering from Bogazici University (Turkey).
Research
My research interests include machine learning, text mining, natural language processing, and social networks. I would like to develop new algorithms related to these fields and apply them to public health, social media and mobile domains.
My master’s study was on Internet Measurements, more particularly, on Internet topology mapping. I also worked as an intern at Bosch Research and Technology center in Palo Alto,CA (Silicon Valley) on Internet of Things.
Beyond Professional Life
Life
I live in Fairfax,VA which is the 3rd town in Forbes’ list of America’s Top 25 Towns To Live Well. Before coming to Washington,DC Metropolitan Area, I enjoyed living in two very different regions of the United States: South (Little Rock,AR and Houston,TX) and West(Reno,NV and San Francisco Bay Area).
Culture & Family
I was born and raised in a Muslim-Turkish environment. My hometown is Izmir (Smyrna) and my college was in Istanbul (Constantinople). I have two sisters and a brother, and I got married in Spring 2012. On this website, I also would like to share some information and my opinions related to my background.
Books & Movies
I like reading books on personal development and self awareness. I enjoy watching historical and thought provoking movies. I admit that some series are also addictive but I try to refrain from them. I watched Prison Break last summer and The Lost when I was a senior.
Sports & Games
I like playing table tennis and soccer with my friends. I used to play computer games a lot, especially when I was a kid. About a month ago, one night, I downloaded an old game,Lemmings and played in an emulator, yay :) I enjoy playing multi-player games and watching others playing.
Travel
I love nature, traveling and having picnic with my loved ones. I and my beloved one usually go to parks (and sometimes museums) around, two of our favorite parks are Fountainhead Regional Park (on Occoquan River) and Burke Lake Park.
